Choosing the Right Floodlight for Every Application

Not every floodlight does the same job.

A doorway, yard, loading area and commercial site can all need something different. The right choice comes down to the size of the space, where the light needs to fall and how you want the fitting to work.

So, rather than starting with wattage, start with the job.

For entrances and smaller external areas

For doorways, side access and smaller outdoor spaces, you usually don’t need a large fitting.

A compact floodlight can give you the coverage you need without overpowering the area. If the light only needs to come on when someone approaches, a PIR option can also make sense.

Think about where the fitting will be mounted and how wide an area it needs to cover. A smaller fitting in the right position can often do a better job than a higher-output option aimed badly.

What to look for:

  • Compact output

  • PIR control if needed

  • Adjustable positioning

  • A colour temperature that suits the space

For security lighting

Security lighting is less about keeping an area constantly lit and more about having the right light come on when it’s needed.

PIR floodlights are useful around entrances, storage areas, yards and access points, but positioning matters.

Think about where people or vehicles are likely to move and where you actually want the sensor to pick them up. If the sensor is pointing at a road, pavement or busy area, it could trigger more often than you want.

Twinspots can also be useful where you want to direct light in more than one direction from a single position.

What to look for:

  • PIR detection

  • Adjustable sensor settings

  • Good coverage of entrances and access points

  • Twin-head options where you need light in more than one direction

For yards, car parks and larger spaces

Larger external areas need more planning. Yards, loading areas and car parks often need higher-output fittings or more than one light to get the coverage right.

Before choosing the fitting, look at the whole space.

Where are people walking? Where are vehicles moving? Are there working areas or corners that could be left in shadow?

For larger jobs, the position and number of fittings can matter just as much as the output itself.

What to look for:

  • Higher light output

  • Good overall coverage

  • Suitable mounting positions

  • Multiple fittings where one won’t cover the whole area

For areas where the beam matters

Sometimes the issue isn’t how much light you have. It’s where the light is going.

A standard floodlight can be fine for general coverage, but on some jobs you may want more control over the beam.

That’s where an asymmetric floodlight can help. Instead of spreading light evenly, it can direct more of it towards the area you actually want to illuminate.

This can be useful around larger commercial buildings, yards and open spaces where controlled coverage is more important than simply increasing the output.

What to look for:

  • Beam pattern

  • Mounting angle

  • Where the light needs to land

  • Whether an asymmetric fitting would give better control

For jobs where you need more flexibility

Sometimes you won’t know exactly what works best until you’re on site.

A colour-switchable floodlight gives you more flexibility, letting you choose the colour temperature to suit the space.

That can be useful if you work across different types of installations or want to carry fewer separate fittings. It also gives you more choice when the customer has a preference for a warmer or cooler light.

What to look for:

  • Selectable colour temperature

  • PIR control where needed

  • Flexible mounting

  • A fitting that can suit more than one type of job

Not sure which floodlight you need?

A quick way to narrow it down is to start with the application:

Application

What to look for

Doorways and small external areas

Compact output, PIR if needed

Security lighting

PIR detection, sensor positioning

Yards and car parks

Higher output, wider coverage

Larger commercial areas

Higher output, planned coverage

Areas needing more beam control

Asymmetric light distribution

Flexible installations

Colour-switchable options

The main thing is not to choose on wattage alone.

Think about the size of the space, where the light needs to fall and how the fitting needs to work. Get those right and choosing the right floodlight becomes much easier.

Darker Days. Sorted.

From small access points to larger commercial spaces, CEF has floodlights for jobs of all sizes.

With PIR, colour-switchable, high-output and asymmetric options available, it’s easier to find the right fitting for the job.
