Rapid solar PV installation for historic pub: Case study

Solar PV installations can present unique challenges, especially when dealing with tight deadlines and busy commercial properties. Read on to discover how CEF Renewables, in partnership with Solv Energy, successfully delivered a high-quality 48.6KWP solar system installation at a popular Victorian pub.

Managing deadlines and materials

Installing a solar PV system on the roof of the Trent Navigation Inn in Nottingham presented some unique challenges for CEF Renewables and installer partner Solv Energy.

There was a tight timeline, with only a 5-day window to complete the 48.6KWP solar system installation. The venue is a busy, historic pub in the heart of Nottingham, meaning there was no on-site storage available for materials and the team had to work efficiently to minimise disruption to the pub's daily operations.

How did we make it happen? Smart design to smooth delivery

CEF were the sole supplier helping Solv Energy to deliver and install this project. Our Renewables team worked in partnership to address the challenges of this specific solar PV installation.

Our internal design team specified K2 Mounting and their Basic Rail solution which offers easier installation and faster on-site assembly, compared to conventional trapezoidal roof mounting solutions. As one of our key supply partners, K2 were also on hand to provide technical support throughout design and installation.

To overcome logistical challenges, we coordinated with our branch team at CEF Nottingham to ensure precise, on-time deliveries. CEF Nottingham ordered and stored materials at their facility a week before the installation.

Throughout the project, they managed a just-in-time delivery system, transporting 120 panels and associated products to the site as needed. This approach eliminated the need for on-site storage and ensured that the installation team had the right materials at the right time.

As well as supplying key components and ancillary products, including cable and containment systems, we also helped Solv Energy with training, provided access to design software, and offered in-house design and specification services. Our comprehensive support package has laid the groundwork for future collaborations.

Results: Fast, efficient and ahead of schedule

Working with CEF Renewables, with the help of our specification and planning services, Solv Energy completed the project in just four days - a day ahead of the already tight schedule.

This not only satisfied the immediate project requirements but also strengthened the partnership between CEF Renewables and Solv Energy, paving the way for future successful collaborations in the renewable energy sector.

Mike Vaughan, Technical Director of Solv Energy says: "Whether we are facing complex challenges or urgent situations, CEF Renewables has always been there to help with a can-do attitude. Their dedication and expertise have helped us navigate and resolve many sticky situations. Their personal service and friendly advice stand out, as they consistently go out of their way to assist us."
